Fear Not

"Do not fear, only believe."

Though the gospel reading was about Jairus's daughter and the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years, those five words were the ones that jumped out at me. Jesus said them to Jairus after they had been told that his daughter was dead.

I feel as though half the time I'm going through life feeling afraid, and the other half I'm doubting--my faith, my beliefs, my life, God. But listen, listen--

"Do not fear, only believe."

Perhaps this not fearing, this believing, precludes thought? Or perhaps Jesus is saying,

I know you've thought, and I know that your thoughts are torturing you.

Wait.
Breathe.

And know that you need not fear. Know that you need only believe.

Wait.
Listen.

Deep down, in your very core, you know what you believe. In love, believe it, and go forth fearless.

At least, that's what I heard whispered in my soul this Sunday.
